Out of 22 finalists, First-Year Electrical Engineering (EE) Student Karlo Miguel Malbog emerged as the Champion of the Statistics Quiz Bee for Freshmen 2022 that was held last October 14 at the Intramuros Campus’ AVR2.

Shawn Benedict Chua (ME-1), Rheymond Ducos (ChE-1), Marc Andrei Tabadero (PHEC-1), and Paul Niño Rodriguez (ChE-1) secured the first runner-up, second runner-up, third runner-up, and fourth runner-up spots of the competition, respectively. All winners were granted a certificate and a total of Php 22,000 cash prize. The champion took home a cash prize worth Php 10,000.00 while the runners-up received Php 5,000.00, Php 3,500.00, Php 2,000.00, and Php 1,500.00, depending on their rank. The champion, first runner-up, and second runner-up were also awarded a gold, silver, and bronze medal, correspondingly.

With some experiences in joining quiz bees back during his elementary and high school days in Tagum City, Davao del Norte, Malbog shared that these helped him to be familiar with the format of the quiz bee, time pressure, and the shortcuts that he can use to solve the problems as fast as possible.

After winning the title, the first-year EE student also encouraged Mapúans to participate in quiz bees. “’Wag lang matakot. […] Kahit hindi manalo, at least may experience makapunta sa campus to meet new [people] na may same interest din in Math. […] Kahit hindi manalo, for the experience na din,” the champion said.

The quiz bee, which was organized by the Mapúa Mathematics Department, covered Probability and Statistics. The elimination round was held via Blackboard last September 21. The 22 finalists from the elimination round were invited to participate in the in-person quiz bee. The said contestants answered the problems to proceed to the next round wherein only 12 of them remained. The students who were part of the Top 5 were awarded at the end of the competition.

The Mapúa Mathematics Department will also be hosting the Math Wizard, an annual competition to test the mathematical skills of Mapúan students from different year levels, early next year.
