With the theme “A Decade with AGGEM,” the Association of Geologists and Geological Engineers of Mapúa (AGGEM) celebrated Geology Week 2021 last February 22 to 28 through different online platforms. However, a webinar scheduled within the week had to be moved to March 7 due to technical difficulties.

The student organization commemorated their 10th anniversary by organizing different events and activities throughout the week. These included daily games, a meme contest, a geology debate, a quiz bee, and educational posts on their social media accounts. They also shared video messages from geology professionals including former AGGEM officers and Program Chair for Geology and Geological Science and Engineering Dr. Maria Carmencita B. Arpa.

Furthermore, AGGEM conducted three webinars throughout the week via Microsoft Teams and Facebook Live.

Ms. Naomi Deirdre Reyes served as the resource speaker about the geology profession during the first webinar last February 22, followed by Ms. Kim Louise O. Salonga who spoke about students gearing up for field geology last February 26. Lastly, February 2021 Geologist Licensure Examination 7th Placer Mr. Nikko M. Balanial explained his thesis about the volcanic deposits at the northern section of Taal Caldera on the third and rescheduled seminar.

According to AGGEM President Raemond John L. Espia, the organization was able to “promote the geological science inside and outside the school,” by conducting seminars that encouraged students to pursue a career in geology and sharing educational posts about the said field.

Nakaramdam din ako ng excitement and motivation kasi na-organize namin ‘tong event, not just for the public, not just for the geological students, but also for us, na-motivate din kami,” Espia emphasized.

For now, the AGGEM President shared that organization is still planning for their other events after completing one of their major events that marked an important milestone; however, they expect to conduct new activities in the following term.
