After years of grinding through the ranks, the Mapúa University Chess Team finally hit its stride with a standout performance in the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Season 100 Chess Tournament held from October 26 to November 18, 2024, at Ayala Malls Manila Bay in Parañaque City.

The Juniors Division achieved a significant milestone and showcased its emerging talents with two golds and a podium finish. Vladimir Rhegz Lait led Board 4 with his calculated moves, earning a gold and the coveted Rookie of the Year title. Meanwhile, Jan Renzo Ochave added to the team’s success with another gold on Board 5.

This marks a season of growth for the juniors, who climbed from a fifth-place finish in Season 99 to secure third place overall and the podium finish for the Cards this year.

On the other hand, the Seniors Division displayed a mix of experience and composure under pressure. Yureeh Panganiban, who competed on Board 4, clinched a silver medal after a series of tense, nail-biting matches. Meanwhile, Team Captain John Paolo Medina displayed amazing skills on Board 2, earning a well-deserved bronze medal that underscored their tactical depth in this fearsome battle of mind and wits.

This year’s podium finish is a testament to the relentless dedication of the Mapúa Chess Team and the leadership of Coach Von Carlson Francisco, who has been at the helm since NCAA Season 99.
