As the pandemic takes its toll on the lives of many Filipinos, Mapúa University (MU), in partnership with the BPI Foundation, Inc. (BPIF), is offering to grant the Pagpupugay Scholarship Fund to 10 students who are next in kin of frontliners who passed away in line of duty against the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19).
BPIF’s Pagpupugay Scholarship Fund is a five-year scholarship program aimed to support the offspring of deceased doctors, nurses, medical technologists, community health workers, administrative, utility, and support services personnel in health facilities. If a frontliner is single or childless, their deserving next of kin up to second-degree consanguinity are qualified to apply.
With a budget of ₱1,000,000 per academic year, the program will cover each scholar’s tuition and school fees up to a maximum of ₱100,000 annually under regular terms until the completion of their educational programs.
Applicants must be verified students of Mapúa University and are maintaining a general weighted average of at least 85% or its equivalent from the previous terms to qualify. They must also submit documents proving kinship, along with the scholarship application forms available online.
MU will screen the applications and submit a shortlist of nominees to BPIF, from which the foundation will select 10 scholars. Applications for the scholarship, which will take effect in the coming academic year, will be accepted until July 10.
“iPeople and its network of schools are one with the bigger academic community in the advocacy to uplift the lives amid and through COVID-19,” Mapúa President and CEO Dr. Reynaldo B. Vea said. The Malayan Colleges Laguna (MCL), Malayan Colleges Mindanao (MCM), National Teachers College (NTC), and University of Nueva Caceres (UNC) are also extending the Pagpupugay Scholarship Fund to their students.
“We hope that through education, our scholars will, in turn, use their knowledge and future expertise to build a better place for Filipinos and humankind, just like their parents so selflessly did,” he imparted.
