The top 3 winners in each of the three competitions will represent the National Capital Region in the National Competition of the 17th Philippine Institute of Industrial Engineers (PIIE) National Student Congress, to be conducted on March 26 to 28.
Students from the School of Industrial Engineering and Engineering Management (IE-EMG) emerged as winners in the NCR Qualifying Rounds organized by the PIIE – National Student Chapter last January 30 via Zoom.
In the event’s Feasibility Study Competition, undegraduate students Alyana Vianca Carreon and Jenile Jaurigue secured the championship title as they presented their study on portable potable water entitled “Feasibility Study: A Water Refilling Station on a Truck.” The pair was supervised by IE-EMG faculty member Engr. Rianina D. Borres, their project feasibility professor who encouraged them to join the competition.
As they move on to the next phase of the competition, Carreon shared what they are anticipating in the National Competition. “We are actually looking forward to the comments of the panel of judges as additional knowledge on a feasibility research. We are also looking forward to gain experience to compete in a National Competition.” Lastly, she added that they are “ [looking] forward to developing skills on how to present our paper virtually where we can overcome our stage fright.”
Meanwhile, two teams from the University finished as the first and second runner-ups in the Research Competition.
The Mapúa University Team 1 settled as the first runner-up with their study entitled “Factors Affecting Perceived Effectiveness of COVID-19 Prevention Measures among Filipino during Enhanced Community Quarantine in Luzon Philippines: Integrating Motivation Theory and Extended Theory of Planned Behavior.” Members of the team are Allysa Mae M. Castillo, Louie John L. Salonga, John Allen L. Sia, and Joshua Adam O. Seneta with adviser Dr. Yogi Tri Prasetyo.
“What inspired us to pursue this topic is that when we were thinking of a research topic, it was also when lockdown has started,” Castillo shared. “So, we want to think of how we can inform Filipinos about the ongoing pandemic in the Philippines by integrating IE tools in this study,” she added.
Meanwhile, the Mapúa University Team 2 – composed of Bennette Marie M. Cañezo, Kenneth E. Manalang, and Ereka Nina Biluan – landed as the second runner-up in the competition with their study entitled "Hotel Selection Model Based on Sentiment Analysis of Reviews and Ratings of Different Nationalities from Five-Star Hotels in Makati City." The team’s adviser was Prof. Rene D. Estember.
Cañezo mentioned that their objective was to create a system that is convenient for the customers and the hotel management industry, especially in the country’s business center – Makati City. “We wanted to create a system of hotel selection which is convenient for both the customer and hotel management. It is convenient for customers in terms of cost-effectiveness and easier decision making, while it gives easier assessment and improvement for the hotel management,” she explained.
Moreover, the team of Ma. Cathyrine Ravina, Kianna Denise Villapando, and Krisanta Ana Draculan ended up as the first runner-up in the Quiz Bee Competition. Prof. Marvin I. Noroña served as their representative coach alongside other IE-EMG faculty members who conducted reviews and helped the team to prepare for the competition including Prof. Rene D. Estember, Prof. Almarose C. Villapando, and Dean Michael N. Young.
Reflecting on their win, Villapando remarked that “When an opportunity knocks on your door, grab it. It’s not only winning that counts but rather the self-fulfillment that comes from being able to experience the rare opportunity.”
