Last August 29, a group of students from Mapúa University’s School of Information Technology (SOIT) became champions with their tech solution BayaniHub in Accenture Philippines’ Program the Future 2020, conducted via Facebook Live.
Eugenio Emmanuel A. Araullo, a student taking a BS-MS joint program in Information Technology, led the MoveMapúa team comprised of third-year undergraduate students taking BS in Information Technology, namely: Andrea Camille Garcia, Darwin A. Medel, Jealine Eleanor E. Gorre, and Gabriel Edrick O. Acuña. Together, they won Php 100,000 after besting other universities in the six-week competition.
Given the tech challenge’s aim of developing technologies to guide communities in transitioning towards a new normal, Garcia, Medel, and Gorre shared that the group’s competition entry was based on their past projects, revisiting key ideas after Acuña and Araullo joined them.
Throughout the duration of the challenge, they reinvented the idea of a digital hailing system to remedy traffic congestion by creating an application and a website for organizing a queueing system in loading and unloading areas, as well as providing digital payment methods and scanning features.
According to the group, BayaniHub is an “all-in-one low-cost scalable IoT solution that combines smart fleet-management systems, transit display retrofitting, and installation, as well as passenger convenience features, to deliver services that cater to Filipino commuters, PUV operators, and, basically— everyone.”
The team aimed for their innovation to be accessible, practical, and easy to use in commuting, especially considering the new safety measures being implemented through the country’s slow shift into the new normal.
“Engagements with BayaniHub [does] not only keep commuters safe but also benefits the drivers and PUV operators as well, hence keeping the spirit of bayanihan alive in these trying times,” they emphasized.
Despite their busy schedules, the team keeps trying to improve their designs – in collaboration with companies such as Lasortech and eSakay, Inc. – to fit more modes of transportation. Before officially launching BayaniHub, they want their solution to be as polished as possible. They hope to pitch their solution to potential investors within the yar and have a viable working prototype installed on vehicles by next year.
“I will personally commit a good amount of my time to working on this project and seeing to it that our team does whatever we can do to make it a reality,” Araullo shared.
