Rise of the New Mapúa Makati

Written by: Lea Ysabel Q. Evangelista and Marianne Lois M. Boncolmo

In the midst of preparations for the opening and transfer of the students to the nearly finished Mapúa University Makati campus along Pablo Ocampo Sr. Extension, the School of Media Studies’ (SMS) Dean, Dr. Benigno B. Agapito Jr., talked about the facilities and equipment in the new campus to provide an overview of what to expect in the new building.

Agapito consented for the move of SMS as it will give them a chance to maximize the resources and services for the students under the media department. “The reason why I also agreed na lumipat kami is because of [the] opportunity to follow ‘yung request namin for appropriate laboratories kasi in Makati, talagang nasunod ‘yung laboratories namin,” the dean added.

Unlike the Intramuros campus’ compound-style design, this new campus will stand as an eight-storey intact building at the boundary between Makati and Manila. With state-of-the-art equipment, the Makati campus will house laboratories and facilities that are designed for better learning conditions. The provisions include upgraded Mac units and terminals, a spacious photography room, a radio and television studio for the newly launched BA Broadcast Media program, video and sound production rooms, a gymnasium on the top floor, and a 150-seater cinema on the second floor of the building.

The very first thing that we considered is the opportunity of our students, since Makati is the center of Advertising and Marketing – in other words, the heart of marketing in the whole Metro Manila. So, I guess moving [to] Makati will give at least an opportunity for our students to be exposed in a real setting of media-related courses,” Agapito emphasized.

Included in the formal announcement of the movement last October 2019 was the transfer of SMS, along with the different departments from the original Makati campus – namely the School of Information Technology (SOIT), E.T. Yuchengco School of Business and Management (ETYSBM), and its Senior High School (SHS) – to the new building.

Construction and furnishing of the new campus are expected to be finished sometime around April of this year and will be fully operational by August, just in time for the new school year.
