SMS holds first online CineMapúa

Marianne Lois M. Boncolmo

Despite the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, the cause for student-made films did not stop as the School of Media Studies (SMS) conducted the 18th CineMapúa Film Festival online last July 20, 22, and 24 through livestreams on YouTube, and virtually awarded the winners last July 26 via Zoom.

Prior to this, the festival was already postponed twice due to the Taal Volcano eruption last January and the start of the pandemic in February. Amid the COVID-19 crisis, the department pursued the festival through different means in which the 36 entries from schools nationwide were screened for free on CineMapúa’s YouTube account on varying days and timeslots. The announcement of winners, on the other hand, was declared online during the virtual awards night.

The Cardinal Excellence Film Award, or the highest distinction given for the overall winner of CineMapúa 2020, was awarded to Kurok from the program BFA Digital Cinema (DC) which also won the Cardinal Gold Film Award for the All Mapúan category. Last 2,3,4 by BFA DC snagged the Cardinal Silver Film Award, while Proj. Imakulada and Zulu – also both by BFA DC – shared the Cardinal Bronze Film Award.

For the Collegiate category, Far Eastern University’s (FEU) Amanung Sisuan earned the Cardinal Gold Film Award. University of Santo Tomas’ (UST) Garing got the Cardinal Silver Film Award, while the Cardinal Bronze Film Award went to Dok from FEU.

For the High School category, Malapit Na Nay from FEU Senior High School won the Cardinal Gold, with Almusal: Ang Tatlong Magkakapatid from Mint College finishing behind for Cardinal Silver, and Takipsilim from Siena College of Taytay Junior High School for Cardinal Bronze.

"This online platform serves as a unique festival but we find it very interesting because it tests our technical capacity to deliver the real purpose of CineMapúa which is to showcase the films of the students and appreciate the value of filmmaking,” SMS Dean and CineMapúa proprietor Benigno B. Agapito Jr. imparted.

A rerun of the ten films from each of the categories took place the CineMapúa FilmFestival YouTube account with the Gold film awardees scheduled on July 31, Silver film awardees on August 1, and Bronze film awardees on August 3 at 7:30 in the evening.

Agapito emphasized the purpose of pushing through with the film festival, although online, and shares how it benefits the students and their families as well as their viewers.

“We achieved our purpose in CineMapúa online film festival, and we gave students, parents, and netizens a very good venue to experience digital education through the message of the films we streamed amid health crisis," he shared.
